What is MGO?
MGO stands for methylglyoxal, the naturally occurring compound that makes Manuka honey unique.
The discovery of MGO as the magic ingredient in Manuka honey was long sought after in the science world. The amount of MGO is a measure of the honey's potency.
MGO testing is a more precise and reliable method of grading Manuka honey based on ground-breaking research.
Iwi Manuka Honey comes in a range of MGO certified grades which are shown on the label. Please view our range of MGO certified Manuka honey on our online store here.
MGO vs UMF Ratings
Most genuine high-grade manuka honey from New Zealand includes either an MGO or UMF rating on the label. Honeys without a UMF or MG/MGO rating are generally low-grade honey without the beneficial characteristics that have made premium manuka honey so much in demand.
Both MGO and UMF are trusted Manuka honey grading systems, and both measure MGO (methylglyoxal) content.
The MGO™ Manuka Honey grading system is a precise and reliable test that simply and directly reflects the MGO content of the honey. The higher the MGO content the higher the grade of honey.
